I. During the progression of AD, hippocampal neurons show degenerative as well as regenerative changes, possibly influenced by the set of molecular regulators that may modify brain reserve, the ability of brain to tolerate pathological changes in AD before manifesting clinical signs and symptoms. My group hypothesizes that expression of these molecules in the hippocampal neurons will correlate with the cognitive function of the participants of the Framingham Heart Study.
II. Small non-coding RNA molecules (microRNAs, miRNAs) are known to regulate genes involved in brain functions negatively affected in neuropsychiatric disorders. My group hypothesizes that exosomes, secretory vesicles recently shown to comprise miRNAs, harbor differential miRNA content in the postmortem brain tissue of patients diagnosed with either bipolar disorder (BD) or schizophrenia (SCH), or of normal controls. The results of our analysis may help elucidate neuropathological mechanisms underlying BD and SCH as well as identify biological markers for BD and SCH.
