Pronouns: he/him/his

My expertise is in protein structure, function, dynamics and folding and chemistry. Methods used include molecular biology, chromatography, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, UV/Vis and circular dichroism spectroscopy, electron microscopy, molecular modeling and dynamics. We look at actin binding proteins (especially those containing villin-type headpiece domains) and lipid binding proteins including apolipoprotein B, the essential protein component of low density lipoprotein (LDL, the bad cholesterol) whose elevated levels are correlated with atherosclerosis, stroke, heart and cardiovascular disease.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility

I am firmly dedicated to fostering, nurturing and expanding diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility at Boston University, in the sciences, and everywhere. I try to think about DEIA in all aspects of my roles here at BUSM. I serve on the Graduate Medical Sciences DEI Committee. I have actively participated in the Summer Training as Research Scholars (STaRS) and Baccalaureate Research Education Programs (PREP) since their respective inceptions. These programs bring under-represented groups to the BU campus to gain research experience and professional development to advance their careers in biomedical science and medicine. I have served as a research mentor to several participants in these programs and I present to them on how to apply and interview for graduate school in the biomedical sciences. In my role as chair of the Program in Biomedical Sciences Admissions Committee, I have helped build DEIA into our application and holistic evaluation of applicants. As the Associate Provost and Dean on Graduate Medical Sciences I have helped to implement the Emerging Scholars Awards to provide financial assistance to under-represented groups with the expensive relocation to the Boston Area. I am always looking for new and innovative ways to promote DEIA.
