Associate Professor
Boston University School of Public Health
Dept of Global Health

MA, Harvard University
PhD, Harvard University

Lora teaches courses in health economics, antiretroviral therapy management, and individual, community and population health for MPH and DrPH students and conducts research in behavioral issues and applied economics related to child health and welfare, HIV and AIDS, malaria, and other infectious diseases in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Her current and recent projects include: assessing the feasibility and acceptability of using real-time monitoring of HIV treatment adherence and the potential to use such monitoring to provide triggered reminders and data-supported counseling to pregnant and post-partum women in Uganda; a rigorous evaluation of using passive and active text messaging to improve knowledge and support continuing medical education among community-based community health workers in Vietnam; a trial to assess the impact of real-time feedback to improve adherence to antiretroviral therapy among HIV-positive individuals in China; exploratory studies of injection-drug users and men who engage in transactional sex among men who have sex with men in Ghana; studies assessing the attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to malaria prevention and treatment among pregnant women in East and Central India; a validation study of the Child Status Index in Malawi; and a cost-effectiveness study of a package of neonatal interventions designed to reduce neonatal mortality in rural Zambia. Dr. Sabin frequently teaches in executive and professional training programs based in the US (Harvard University, Duke University) and was a member of the core faculty of the Vietnam AIDS Policy and Planning Project, a training program designed to strengthen the response to the HIV epidemic for local and national government officials in Vietnam. Before joining the BUSPH, Lora worked in the Asia Public Policy Program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and at the Harvard Institute for International Development. While there, she served as the Academic Director of the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program, a Harvard-managed academic center in Ho Chi Minh City, from 1998-2001. Lora has lived in East Asia for ten years and has taught at universities and academic centers in China, Taiwan, and Vietnam. She holds a MA in East Asian Studies and PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.
