 Research Expertise & Professional Interests
Susan V. Eisen, PhD, is a Health Research Scientist at the Center for Health Quality, Outcomes and Economic Research (CHQOER). Dr. Eisen teaches PM 830, Developing Patient-Based Measures of Health Status. At CHQOER she directs the VA Health Services Research & Development post-doctoral fellowship program and leads the patient-centered care research area. Dr. Eisen's research interests include assessment of the quality and outcomes of mental health and substance abuse services, consumer-centered care, recovery from mental illness, racial/ethnic disparities in mental health, and performance measurement in mental health care. She is the primary developer of the Behavior and Symptom Identification Scales (BASIS-32 and 24), patient self-report instruments designed to assess mental health treatment outcomes, and the Perceptions of Care Survey, a self-report instrument to assess quality of mental health care from the patient's perspective. In addition, she has worked collaboratively with colleagues to develop the Experience of Care and Health Outcomes (ECHO) survey to assess consumer perceptions of mental health care and insurance plans.  Dr. Eisen has extensive experience in developing and validating consumer self-report measures of mental health quality and outcomes of care using qualitative and quantitative methods. She currently leads two VA Health Services Research studies: one to develop a computer-adapted test for PTSD, and a second to examine the roles, work experiences, mental health recovery and quality of life for veterans employed in the VA as peer support or vocational rehabilitation specialists. She is also collaborating with Dr. Rani Elwy and colleagues at the University of Connecticut to develop the Essential Properties of Yoga Questionnaire (EPYQ), a tool which will facilitate rigorous research on the health effects of yoga. She recently completed a randomized study of a peer support intervention for veterans receiving mental health treatment, and a national survey examining risk and resilience factors for mental health and substance abuse problems among veterans returning from deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan. Prior to joining CHQOER and the Health Policy and Management Department, Dr. Eisen directed the Department of Mental Health Services Research at McLean Hospital.
