Framingham heart study data was utilized to develop reference equations for single breath diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO), alveolar volume (VA) and DLCO /VA. The produced equations utilize the largest Caucasian population in existing literature over a wide age range. Application of the equation to FHS cohorts resulted to a significant changes in expected DLCO values compared to existing equations, suggesting adoption would have important clinical implications.
