Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility
My professional career has been grounded on caring for underserved populations, and I deeply value diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. While serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal before attending medical school, I witnessed the 1990 revolution that replaced the absolute monarchy with a democracy. During my weekly primary care clinic as a pediatric resident at UCSF, I cared for an underserved predominately LatinX population at San Francisco General Hospital. For the past 15 years I have worked as a general academic pediatrician at Boston Medical Center, where I care for a diverse population of underserved natives of Roxbury and Dorchester, as well as a multi-lingual cohort of immigrants from around the world. I have published manuscripts that describe 1) the implementation of a resident diversity council to address the need for a diverse clinical workforce, and 2) the poor quality of care delivered to children with sickle cell disease covered by Medicaid. I plan to continue to prioritize caring for, and teaching about, a diverse and underserved patient population.
