Dr. Zhang is a clinician-investigator specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine, with a research focus on integrating traditional epidemiologic methods with bioinformatics and multi-omics approaches to improve risk prediction and elucidate the pathobiology of COPD and other chronic lung diseases. He conducts epidemiologic research through the Framingham Heart Study and the COPDGene Study and collaborates with other cohorts within the NHLBI Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) Program. His current research interests include: 1) Identifying obesity- and body composition-related determinants of COPD risk and heterogeneity, including cardiovascular outcomes; and 2) Defining lung and liver disease risk and improving disease risk stratification in individuals with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, including genetic carriers.
