Theresa Leak-Gonzalez, MD has a background in medical care for the underserved, starting with medical school at NYU Grossman School of Medicine/Bellevue Hospital in New York City, followed by an internship at Swedish Family Medicine Residency-Cherry Hill Campus in Seattle, WA and then back to the Bronx where she completed her residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center. As a recipient of the National Health Service Corp Scholarship, she continued after residency working with underserved patients at Union Health Care Center- a clinic that serves immigrant factory workers in NYC, and which was originally part of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. There she was involved in the development of a Patient Centered Medical Home model of care. She also precepted Internal Medicine residents at St. Vincent Medical Center’s free clinic in lower Manhattan and precepted medical students from New York Medical College in her continuity clinic. She also trained in identification and documentation of torture, and volunteered with Doctors of the World doing medical exams and court affidavits to assist victims of state sponsored torture obtain political asylum. Upon moving to New England, she worked in private practice and in 2014 started working as a full time primary care provider at VA Bedford’s Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). In 2020 she became the VA Bedford Healthcare System’s Graduate Medical Education Family Medicine Site Director where she has worked to build, improve and expand educational opportunities for Family Medicine residents rotating through the Bedford VA. She also longitudinally precepts Nurse Practitioner students from Boston College Connell School of Nursing D.N.P Program.
