Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery

Sarah C. Nyirjesy, MD is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center. She is a head and neck oncologic and reconstructive surgeon with expertise in microvascular free tissue transfer and transoral robotic surgery. Her clinical and research interests center on surgical innovation, particularly the use of 3D printing, computer-assisted design, and tissue engineering to improve outcomes for patients with head and neck cancer.

Dr. Nyirjesy received her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine, completed residency training at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and pursued fellowship training in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction at Harvard Medical School/Mass Eye and Ear.

She has been recognized nationally for her work in surgical innovation. In 2023, her development of a patient-specific 3D-printed splint to manage a life-threatening facial wound—granted emergency authorization by the FDA—was featured by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as a groundbreaking advance in patient care. She was also the recipient of a CORE Resident Research Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation, supporting her study of listening effort in cochlear implant users.

Dr. Nyirjesy has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading journals including Oral Oncology, Head & Neck, and JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery. She is an active reviewer for JAMA Otolaryngology and Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, and she regularly presents her work at national and international scientific meetings.

She is a member of the American Head and Neck Society, where she serves on the Development Service Committee and the Young Members Service Committee, and is also an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.

Dedicated to mentorship and education, Dr. Nyirjesy has taught undergraduates, medical students, and residents, with many of her mentees presenting research and publishing under her guidance.

Through her clinical practice, research, and collaborations with biomedical engineers, Dr. Nyirjesy aims to advance the field of personalized head and neck reconstruction and to expand access to innovative technologies that improve patient care.
