Dr. Michael C. O’Connor Jr. is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and an Attending Surgeon in the Department of Surgery at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Boston. He earned his Medical Doctorate (MD) from Hofstra University’s Zucker School of Medicine, Uniondale, NY. Dr. O’Connor completed his surgical residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago.

Dr. O’Connor’s clinical expertise encompasses cardiothoracic and general surgery, with a focus on complex procedures such as esophageal perforation management and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor surgery. His research contributions include a commentary on tumor biology in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and a chapter on the middle mediastinum in Sabiston and Spencer Surgery of the Chest. He has presented at regional conferences on topics ranging from metastatic carcinoid to abdominal compartment syndrome, showcasing his breadth of surgical knowledge.

An engaged educator, Dr. O’Connor mentors medical students and residents, guiding projects presented at venues like the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He delivers grand rounds lectures on surgical topics, contributing to the academic mission of his institutions.
