I became interested in public health in the early 1990s when, as a dental hygienist, I ran a dental outreach program for schoolchildren at Children’s Hospital in Boston. In 1999, I joined the faculty in the Division of Community Health Programs at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and took on a larger role in planning, implementing and evaluating public health programs and initiatives. Upon earning a MPH in 2003, I took on the role of Oral Health Promotion Director for the Goldman school. Since 2003, I have been involved with various aspects of service learning and community-based oral health education and promotion activities. I present lectures in pre- and post- doctoral courses related to preventive dentistry, recruit and foster volunteer dental students, present at professional meetings and conferences, and have a special interest in inter-professional, multi-cultural delivery of oral healthcare. Although I was a member prior to 1999, I became actively involved in the Oral Health Section that year. Beginning in 2001, I have served two terms as Secretary, Section Councilor, Chair, and Governing Councilor. In addition, I chaired the Scientific Planning Committee and helped to establish a student award. As a member of the ISC-Steering Committee, I served on the Committee for Social Responsibility for three years and as the ISC-SC Rep to the Council of Affiliates for one year. I look forward to chairing the ISC-SC and being part of the APHA Executive Board.
