Karen Cullen (she/her) is a Certified Nurse Midwife and Women's Health and Gender Related Health Nurse Practitioner with over twenty years of experience in perinatal nursing. Since joining the midwifery team at Boston Medical Center (BMC) in 2021 she has prioritized engagement in increasing interprofessional education and collaboration, patient autonomy and supporting the physiology of birth. In 2023 she co presented a grand rounds entitled ““The State of VBAC and Uterine Rupture at BMC: Moving Towards a Justice Based Approach” and worked with the Maternity Care Guidelines Committee to remove the routine requirement of the VBAC calculator. As the department’s lead education midwife, Karen welcomes OB interns by running their summer Physiology of Birth Series and continues to work collaboratively across disciplines to ensure BMC’s clinical policies reflect its stated mission. Clinically she strives to demonstrate trauma informed, evidence based clinical care delivered through a reproductive justice framework. Additional areas of interest include decreasing systemic barriers to prenatal care, clinical simulation, and culturally humble care.
