Anesthesiology

MD, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
BS, Indiana University Bloomington

Dr. Jamel Ortoleva completed his undergraduate education with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in December of 2007. He began his medical career in August of 2008 as a student at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and was awarded his MD in May of 2012. Dr. Ortoleva completed his internship at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts and completed residency in Anesthesia at Yale New Haven Hospital in 2016.

After completing a critical care fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2017 and a Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 2018, he joined Tufts Medical Center as a Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologist and Intensivist with heavy involvement in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) cannulation and management, having performed cannulations for multiple modes and for multiple indications including venovenous, standard venoarterial and venoarterial ECMO for patients receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or eCPR and for COVID-19 patients. Additionally, at Tufts, he developed the bedside cannulation kit and expanded the use of TEE for bedside ECMO cannulation.

Dr. Ortoleva began at Boston Medical Center in May of 2023 and is a member of the ECMO team. He is an associate professor of anesthesiology through the Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. He is the director of research in the department of Anesthesiology at Boston Medical Center and actively involved in research at a multi-institutional level with over 115 peer reviewed manuscripts. His research interests include mechanical circulatory support decision making, mechanical circulatory support initiation and management, vasoplegia management, right ventricular failure, echocardiography, and resuscitation.
