Demian Szyld (pronounced “shield”), is an Attending Physician at Boston Medical Center where he cares for acutely ill and injured and enjoys being on high performance teams and teaching at the bedside. He is the Director of Innovation in Education.
From 2016-2021 he was the Senior Director of the Institute for Medical Simulation – the Faculty Development Program at the Center for Medical Simulation. He practiced Emergency Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and was a Lecturer at Harvard Medical School.
Demian trained in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and was the first Simulation and Education Fellow at the STRATUS Simulation Center at BWH. During that time he completed a Master’s in Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
From 2011 to 2016 he was the Medical Director of NYSIM, the simulation center of the NYU School of Medicine and the City University of New York where he established a Simulation and Education Fellowship, served on the Curriculum and Assessment Comities and led the integration of Simulation Education in Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education.
Dr. Szyld is actively involved in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and has chaired the Formal Training Affinity Group, led the Affiliations Committee and served as an Accreditation Site Reviewer and completed a term on the Board of Directors (2016-2019).
His academic and scholarly focuses on evidence based approaches to teaching and assessing clinical skills and more recently on bringing the techniques of reflection and debriefing to the clinical setting. His current focus is Debriefing in the Clinical Environment and Faculty Development.
Demian grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina until the age of 14. His mother, grandmother and other extended family still live there. Demian currently lives in Cambridge, MA with his family who speak Spanish, English and Bengali.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility
I’m committed to developing myself and my colleagues to continuously improve inclusivity. In my view, this includes recognizing my privilege as a cis-man with European ancestry, although I also have a Latinx cultural background and have a mixed race, multi-religious, multi-language household and family. I hope to share my lived experience and collaborate with others to help facilitate open conversations about gender, race, and bias, continuously examine our policies and practices to identify and eliminate institutional racism, and continue developing and supporting programs throughout the pipeline to enhance the diversity of our workforce and the academy. I see a bright future ahead, and although I don’t know exactly what roads we will be called to traverse on this journey, I do think that our leadership group and our institution has the talent, vision, and determination to improve the lives and experience of everyone who comes to train, work or seeks care in the Boston Medical Center Emergency Department.
