Dr. Ali J. Abdallah is the Assistant Academic Director and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the postgraduate Prosthodontics Division of the Restorative Sciences and Biomaterials Department of Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM). Dr. Abdallah was appointed Assistant Academic Director in July 2023 and has been a faculty member since 2021. Prior to that, he received a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) and a Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD) in Prosthodontics from GSDM, during which he received the David J. Baraban Award for Excellence in 2020. His doctoral research aimed to study the use of novel high-strength polymers as prosthetic materials for full mouth oral rehabilitation of dental patients using dental implants. The dissertation was titled "Machinability of High-Strength Dental Polymers and Their Performance as Framework Materials for All-on-Four Prostheses." Dr. Abdallah received the American Dental Association's 2022 John W. Stanford New Investigator Award for this research. His current academic activities include directorship of the postdoctoral Prosthodontics program, which compromises directing several postgraduate courses, supervising clinical care, and mentoring master's and doctoral residents completing biomaterials research.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility

As a member of Boston University's clinical care team at the BU Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) and BU's Dental Health Center for several years, I have been a dental care provider for some of the most under-served patients in Greater Boston and New England. Our patients are racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse. Many are minorities, including immigrants, with poor oral and general health and financial limitations that have prevented them from seeking comprehensive oral care, especially in the absence of affordable comprehensive insurance options. Within that group of susceptible patients, there is a subset of patients struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues which tends to exclude them from mainstream private dental care.

Since 2021, I have been a Clinical Assistant Professor in the postgraduate prosthodontics program at GSDM, the program where I completed my own specialty training. I have had the opportunity to teach residents patient management in this challenging clinical environment. One of my personal goals has been to help them develop the empathy and skillset necessary to practice diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice towards their patients, colleagues, and staff during their residency and in their forthcoming careers.

The working environment at BU GSDM is remarkably conducive to DEIAJ, with faculty, staff, residents, and students of all backgrounds, be it natonality, ethnicity, race, and sexual identity and orientation, all working towards a common goal - to further dental education and dental care.
