Regarding mentorship I am a mentor at BU and beyond for students and residents interested in surgery. These relationships have also provided insight for my activities as an Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency and help me provide guidance to them about residency, fellowship and academic pursuits. Over the years at each institution I have had an increasing number of student and resident mentees and now am mentoring on average seven a year. I teach them how to prepare abstracts and manuscripts as well as prepare poster and oral presentations for the BU, regional and national forums. I have mentored students from all four years of medical school. First- and second-year students have co-authored papers with one of my resident mentees, and through the research and writing process that mentee has learned how to mentor multiple students as well. I have also worked with a particular surgery resident mentee to obtain a foundation grant and to apply for other patient safety funding opportunities. I serve on the General Surgery Resident Research Committee at BU and attend resident research presentations up to eight times a year. This represents another forum for mentorship. Finally I also have been a mentor through national organizations including Women in Thoracic Surgery, of which I am a past president, and the Women in Surgery Committee for the American College of Surgeons, for which I serve on the mentoring subcommittee.
