Robert D. Oates, MD, FACS, is a professor of urology at Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. Having completed one of the early clinical fellowships in male reproductive medicine and surgery with Larry Lipshultz, MD, in 1988, he returned to Boston and has had an active clinical fellowship of his own since 1992.

Oates has presented at local, national, and international meetings on innumerable occasions. He has been instrumental in male reproductive surgical research, authoring the first papers on the intentional cryopreservation of epididymal and testis sperm, now a common approach in many IVF centers. He has also been actively involved in clinical and laboratory research on the genetic basis of male reproductive failure.

Oates serves as president of the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction (SSMR), directs both the fellowship and residency programs for the Boston University department of urology, collaborates both nationally and internationally on numerous research projects with many top investigators, and has a busy clinical practice involving all aspects of male reproductive medicine and surgery.
