Dr. Rebecca Noelle Bates is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and an Attending Physician in the Department of Medicine and Pediatric Urgent Care at Boston Medical Center. She earned her Medical Doctorate (MD) from St. George’s University School of Medicine, Grenada and her Master of Public Health (MPH) in Behavioral Science and Health Education from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Bates completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and a fellowship in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound at Boston Medical Center.

Dr. Bates’ clinical expertise spans internal medicine, pediatrics, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), with a focus on enhancing diagnostic precision and patient care in acute settings. She leads the POCUS pathway for General Internal Medicine residents at Boston Medical Center and teaches ultrasound techniques to medical students and residents in emergency and internal medicine. Her global health contributions include teaching POCUS to military doctors in Ukraine and emergency medicine residents in Nigeria, as well as providing volunteer medical care in Ukrainian villages and Greek refugee camps. Her research, published in Chest, includes case reports on rare causes of respiratory failure and leukemia complications.

An active educator, Dr. Bates supervises residents in POCUS-assisted procedures and delivers lectures on global health and adolescent sexual health. She is a member of the Society for Clinical Ultrasound Medicine and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and POCUS, and licensed in Massachusetts, Dr. Bates received the James W. Alley Award for Outstanding Service to Disadvantaged Populations.
