As much as I wanted to be a doctor, I chose nursing for my undergraduate degree because I felt that was as close as I could get to working with patients. Nursing taught me how to relate to patients and how to be their advocate.

I graduated from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I enjoyed nursing, but the more I was involved in the hospital, the more I appreciated the work of physicians. I went on to attend the University of Santo Tomas, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, where I received my medical degree.

I worked as a cardiac surgery intensive care unit (ICU) nurse at the University of Maryland Medical Center and University of Minnesota Medical Center Fairview before attending internal medicine residency at St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. I joined Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center as a hospitalist in July 2012.
