Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility

Over the last decade I have been instrumental at setting up and evaluating care pathways for those in low resource settings. I have paired program delivery with robust clinical research in order to address the imbalance present within academic literature which under-represents the oral health experiences of those in marginalised settings. My experiences in doing this work among communities in Cambodia, Nepal, Timor Leste, and Somaliland have helped me to develop my skills in cross-cultural communication and challenged me to become more competent at including those from different groups in the processes of designing and interpreting research. As well as these sets of skills translating well to my role as a teacher and mentor these are skills that will help me to pursue rigorous, people centred research in my role at Boston University. A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and access has served as the foundation of my professional career.

I am committed to amplifying the ways in which GDMS and Boston University pursue its long-standing commitment to community engagement by service in my role as Assistant Professor in the Office of Global and Population Health. For example, I am leading a clinical program to expand services to preschool children in head start programs and I am conducting participatory research to better understand the oral health experiences of older adults in long term care settings.
