MD, Umass Medical School

Dr. Walkey investigates epidemiology and clinical outcomes of complications that occur in patients who are critically ill. Using clinical and administrative data, Dr. Walkey focuses on interations between organ systems during critical illness and seeks to find effective health care provider practice patterns that are associated with better patient outcomes. His research interests include sepsis, acute lung injury, and atrial fibrillation that occurs during critical illness.

I have mentored more than 15 MD post-graduates in critical care health services research. Mentees have to date published >15 first-authored, peer reviewed manuscripts, including Web of Science Top 1% cited. Mentees have received multiple American Thoracic Society travel awards for research, as well as First Prize for research presented at the 2016 Massachusetts Thoracic Society Meeting. I received 2 Research Mentor Awards for outstanding achievement as a research mentor from the Boston University Department of Medicine during year 2016. I serve as a Director of the Evans Center for Implementation & Improvement Sciences, where we mentor School of Medicine faculty through completion of projects with scientific rigor.
