Dr. Bokhour is an Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management at Boston University School of Public Health and Senior Research Health Scientist at the Center for Health Quality, Outcomes and Economic Research at the Bedford VA. Dr. Bokhour is an expert in the use of qualitative research methods for health services research. She applies her expertise to research involving the practices of health professionals, patient-provider communication and the effect of culture on communication, racial and ethnic disparities in health, and the lives of individuals with chronic illness. In addition, she has expertise in the use of qualitative methods in implementation research, leading the qualitative core of the HIV/Hepatitis Quality Enhancement Research Initiative at the Bedford VA. Dr. Barbara Bokhour is leading and collaborating in several studies that demonstrate the usefulness of qualitative methods to improve self-management of chronic illness and patient-provider communication in health care. Dr. Bokhour has led studies on the roles of patients’ explanatory models and daily context on self-management of chronic illnesses such as child asthma and hypertension, and on patient-provider communication about adherence in asthma, hypertension and HIV. She is Co-PI on a current study utilizing patient stories to improve hypertension management among African-American Veterans with hypertension. In addition, Dr. Bokhour has recently used qualitative methods to examine barriers and facilitators to implementing evidence based practices in clinical settings. Dr. Bokhour teaches a course in qualitative research methods for health services research.She holds a PhD in psychology and discourse studies from Clark University.
