 Research Expertise & Professional Interests
After graduating Seoul National University, College of Dentistry with Summa Cum Laude and DDS degree, I studied orthodontics at the same institution and received the Master of Science degree. I came to the U.S. and further studied orthodontics under renowned orthodontic researcher, Dr. Charles J. Burstone at the University of Connecticut. After one year of research in the biomechanics of orthodontic tooth movement, I enrolled in an advanced standing program at the University of Connecticut and received the DMD degree. I practiced clinical dentistry as a staff dentist and later as dental director at the regional senior center in Connecticut taking care of a geriatric population in 11 towns of northeast Connecticut.

After working as a dental clinician for 20 years, I started my second career as a researcher by accepting a fellowship from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in geriatric dentistry. I studied epidemiology, biostatistics and oral biology for 2 years and accumulated 32.5 academic credits.
At the end of my Harvard Geriatric fellowship, I won another fellowship from Veterans Affairs where I studied the medication-induced xerostomia and its impact on oral health under Dr. Judith A Jones. Simultaneously, I got accepted in the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program at the Harvard School of Public Health. For the MPH program, I acquired an additional 40 credits in epidemiology or biostatistics resulting in the total accrual of 72.5 credits from Harvard University. During this time, I was particularly interested in prediction modeling and my first paper was published in The Lancet.

After graduating from Harvard School of Public Health with an MPH degree, I worked at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the Division of Preventive Medicine researching carbohydrate metabolism and systemic health under Dr. Simin Liu. I studied the role of glycemic index (GI) in the pathogenesis of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Concurrently, I studied nutrition at the department of Nutritional Epidemiology, Harvard School of Public Health. During this time, I published several papers on nutrition and diabetes prevention as well as on the relationship of oral health and cardiovascular diseases.

In 2003, I joined the faculty of Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine in the Department of General Dentistry. I continue my research in glucose metabolism, oral infection in relation to inflammatory vascular pathology such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases while publishing over 20 papers on the topic. Currently, my research interests are expanding towards immunological aspects of inflammatory diseases and/or the molecular basis of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. I have recently presented my prediction modeling for Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease, at the 9th International Autoimmunity Congress in March 2014, at Nice, France.
