Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility
I came into the study of dentistry by way of an undergraduate degree in public health and independent study in nutrition. Dentistry has provided the opportunity for me to integrate my love of art, science, and culture while taking a chance on myself as business person. My focus in healthcare has always been more on the prevention of disease rather than the treatment of such. In some ways, I feel that I was preparing myself for diversity work before it was clearly defined as an area of study. The diversity of life is a source of inspiration for me. Diversity allows me to learn about the history and culture of others while sharing my own experiences, which opens many social possibilities. In the same way that the biological sciences are at the core of healthcare understanding, I believe that an understanding of diversity is essential to optimal healthcare delivery.
It is a privilege for me to serve as the the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, & Justice at the Goldman School of Dental Medicine. The environment supports interdisciplinary collaboration on the community and international levels. We are all diverse and there is enough diversity work for all of us!
